Compton’s Big Night Sinks Knights In Home Opener

STANWOOD - Football teams are not made up of one player, however, one player can make an impact on the outcome of a football game. That was the case last Friday at the Durant-North Cedar game in Stanwood. There, Durant senior receiver and returner Mason Compton had a monster game in helping the Wildcats to a 49-18 victory. Durant evened their record to 1-1 with the win while North Cedar fell to 0-2 after two weeks.
Compton scored four touchdowns in the game, three of them from touchdown passes and the other from a kick-off return. Compton caught touchdown passes of 15, 80 and 15 yards from quarterback Bryce Lafrenz in the game. Compton also returned a North Cedar kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown in the second half. That score was just after North Cedar got an 83-yard kick-off return from Brody Hawtrey to give the game back-to-back touchdowns on special teams kick-off returns, something rare in high school football.
Durant scored the game’s first points with the first of Compton’s receiving touchdowns with 6:58 left in the opening quarter. It was a 13-play drive to start the game ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Lafrenz to Mason Compton. North Cedar matched that score on the next drive with a Logan Thimmes 1-yard run to set the score at 7-6 Wildcats. Compton’s second touchdown catch with 32 seconds left in the quarter set the score at 13-6.
Durant scored the only points in the second quarter on a 20-yard Marcus Engstler touchdown catch and a Tristan Hughes 1-yard run to take a 27-6 halftime lead.
Each team scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. A 4-yard scoring pass from Ethan Sahr to Kael Unruh set the score at 27-12, but that is as close as the Knights could get. Durant used Compton’s third scoring pass to extend their lead to 35-12. Then both teams traded kick-off returns as the score stood at 43-18 after three quarters.
Durant added a Tristan Hughes 10-yard run in the fourth quarter with 5:41 left to play to set the final at 49-18.
Offensively for Durant, Hughes rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. Bryce Lafrenz passed for 230 yards on 13 completions and had 4 touchdown passes. Defensively, Zac Badtram and Hughes led Durant in tackles with 16 and 14.
Offensively for North Cedar, Logan Thimmes rushed for 127 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Ethan Sahr passed for 52 yards and a touchdown while Tyler Alexander had two catches for 14 yards. Defensively, Tyler Thurston led North Cedar tacklers with 10 and Thimmes added 8.
