TIPTON — The Tipton Tigers won their 2018 season opener last week against North Cedar, using dominance in the second half of the game to win. In a game that looked a little like last week, the Tigers captured a 27-17 victory over class 3A foe Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday. The last time the Tigers played Vinton-Shellsburg was on October 18, 1985, when the Tigers won 20-7 at Vinton. Vinton-Shellsburg was only Vinton at the time.
Tipton had 204 yards of total offense with 11 first downs in the game. The Tigers converted almost half of their 11 third down conversions and also converted both fourth down conversion attempts.
“The first half we struggled on both sides of the football,” said Tipton head football coach Joe Zeutenhorst. “In the second half we bought a different intensity level and were much more physical,” he said.
Logan Stolte led Tipton in rushing with 75 yards on ten carries and had a 7.5-yard average per carrying in the football game. Connor Hermiston rushed for 59 yards on six carries. Blake Wilkins completed 50-percent of his passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Logan Stolte caught a 31-yard scoring pass and Frank Bierman caught his second touchdown in as many weeks after catching a 13-yard pass.
Defensively, Tipton senior Dylan Mete led the Tigers in tackles with 10 while Nile Schuett and Stolte each had 8 and Skylar Harroun had 7.
For the season to date, the Tigers have outgained their opponents by over 125 yards and have rushed for nearly 400 more yards than their opponents. The Tigers also have 12 more team first downs in their first two games than their foes.
Individually Tipton has four running backs with over 100 yards on the ground and those four running backs have no less than a 6.5-yard per carrying average. Defensively, Tipton has three players with over 20 tackles including two linebackers and a lineman.
Vinton-Shellsburg had 251 yards of total offense with 13 first downs, two more than the Tigers. Vinton-Shellsburg struggled in third-down conversions, going 4-for-15 attempts.
Brooks Erickson passed for 60 yards and Jose Wilson rushed for 120 yards on 22 carries to lead V-S. Sam Griffith caught three passes for 59 yards to lead his team. Defensively, Isaac Wiley had a team-high 10 tackles while C.J. Rickels, Wilson, and Jay Young each had five tackles.
The Tigers will travel to Durant this Friday to play the Wildcats. Durant has a record of 1-1 through two weeks with a loss to Wilton and a win over North Cedar last week 49-18. The trip to Durant is the first of two straight road games. The Tigers return home on September 21 against Camanche before playing weeks six and seven on the road at Mount Vernon and West Burlington. The Tigers and Wildcats will renew their rivalry where the winner will play for the sledgehammer trophy. The winner gets to keep the ‘sledge’ until the next season the two teams play.
The two teams took turns scoring in the first half, answering each other's scores with one of their own. Vinton-Shellsburg scored the game’s first points of the game with an Alex Pladsen 24-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The three points capped an 11-play drive. The Tigers had to punt on the ensuing possession, but the Tigers held V-S down on their next drive, forcing a punt. The Tigers took the lead, going on a 6-play, 61-yard drive ending in a Blake Wilkins 31-yard touchdown pass and a Frank Bierman PAT to give Tipton a 7-3 lead after the first quarter.
Vinton-Shellsburg grabbed a 10-7 lead on their next possession when Brooks Erickson scored from 5 yards out. The Tigers answered with a touchdown to retake the lead at 14-10. Wilkins’ second touchdown pass of the first half, this one 13 yards to Frank Bierman, gave the Tigers a lead they would hold the rest of the game.
The Tigers took control of the football game in the second half. After a scoreless third quarter, Tipton scored twice in the final quarter. Austin Lenz returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown give Tipton a 20-10 lead. Later, Logan Stolte rushed for a 23-yard touchdown run to set the score at 27-10, their biggest lead of the night.
For all of the Tigers success, Vinton-Shellsburg didn’t quit, scoring a touchdown with 2:13 left to play in the game to trim the Tigers lead to 27-17. On the ensuing kick-off, Vinton-Shellsburg executed an onside kick and recovered. However, Tipton intercepted a V-S pass on a 4th down situation to end the threat.
