BELLEVUE — Coming off a tough four-point loss at #8 West Branch, the Tipton football team hoped that the 10th ranked Bellevue Comets would have a slow start in their game this past week, but it wasn’t to be. The Comets raced to a 28-0 first half lead on their way to a 42-0 victory over the Tigers. The last time Tipton was shutout was a 10-0 loss at home to Monticello in week eight of the 2014 season. The Comets kept pace for the second spot in district 3 with the win and improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in district play. The Comets are tied with Clayton Ridge and Maquoketa Valley at 3-1. Tipton fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in district 3 and have lost two straight games.
Bellevue got a big game from their skill guys quarterback Cade Daugherty and running back Hunter Clasen. Daugherty is second in class 1A and leads district 3 with 1,443 passing yards and 14 touchdowns while Clasen is fourth in class 1A and leads district 3 in rushing yards with 891. Clasen rushed for 131 yards on 21 carries and four touchdowns while Daugherty passed for 256 yards and rushed for 16. He threw one touchdown and ran for another.
In the first half, a Daugherty 7-yard run got the Comets on the scoreboard first on their first drive, capping a 7-play, 67-yard drive. Clasen then rushed for the first of his three first half and first of his four scoring runs in the game from 4 yards out to give Bellevue a 14-0 lead. Two Clasen touchdown in the second put the score at 28-0 at halftime. Another Clasen touchdown in the third pushed the Comet lead to 35-0 by the end of the third quarter and started the 35-point mercy rule running clock. Trey Daugherty caught six passes for 107 yards and Trevor Hager caught three passes for 78 yards for Bellevue. Defensively, Riley Konrardy had a team high 9 tackles and Ben Parker had 7.
Keith Penningroth got his first extensive time at fullback in the game and he came through with 77 yards rushing. Ben Emrich completed one pass, a 14-yard gain to Frank Bierman. Defensively, the Tigers were led in tackles by Logan Stolte with 12 and Ben Emrich with 11.
The Tigers return home Friday to play Durant in their last home game of the season. The Tigers will finish the season with road games at West Branch on October 13 and at North Cedar on October 20.
The Wildcats come to town coming off of a near upset over #8 West Branch 24-23 in a game that saw the Bears need a 42-yard field goal with less than a minute to win the game. On offense, Durant is led by quarterback Bryce Lafenz who has passed for 822 yards and 9 touchdowns on 50-of-90 attempts. Tristan Hughes is the leading rusher with 419 yards, 5 touchdowns and a 4.4-yard average. Mason Compton is the top Durant receiver with 23 receptions for 365 yards and four touchdowns.
