CLARENCE — The North Cedar Knight volleyball team won a share of the RVC North title last Thursday at home, beating Bellevue 3-1 in the RVC finale for both teams. The Knights win marks the fourth straight conference title for the Knights. North Cedar improved to 4-1 in the RVC North, 6-1 in RVC matches and 17-10 overall with the win. The Knights win, along with Monticello’s 3-2 win over Camanche at home the same night, created the three-way tie for the RVC North crown between North Cedar, Camanche and Monticello. The Indians received the top seed in the North for the RVC tournament this week while Monticello was second and North Cedar third in seedings for the tournament. The teams will play this week on Tuesday and Thursday with pool play Tuesday and championship bracket play Thursday in Camanche.
North Cedar lost the first set 25-20 before winning the next three sets. North Cedar won the second set 25-16 to tie the match at 1-1. The third set in the match was the turning point where North Cedar won 28-26 to take a 2-1 match lead. North Cedar claimed the match with a 25-18 fourth set win.
The Knights entered the class 2A rankings, entering for the first time this season at #13 in class 2A. Darby Hawtrey showed why she is one of the top players in the conference leading the way with 29 kills, 20 digs, 7 blocks and a serving night of 8-for-8. Katie Thompson and Darian Gray each had 6 kills while Kelly Proesch netted four kills. Taylor Tenley led four players 20 digs with 26 followed by Sydney Dennis with 25 and Gray with 23. North Cedar had 16 blocks in the match and only missed four serves in the match, going 94-for-97. Gray led North Cedar servers going 29-for-29 in the match.
The match loss for the Comets was their third straight defeat. The Comets lost to Monticello two days earlier in Monticello and ended their RVC season with two road matches, both losses.
Rebecca Schroeder had 20 kills and Emma Kelchen had 16 to lead Bellevue. Giana Michels had 25 digs and Schroeder had 23. Schroeder had 20 assists and Brin Daugherty had 19. Bellevue served 81-for-85 as a team with 4 aces. Michels led Bellevue in serving, going 17-for-18 with 2 aces.
Knights Upset State Ranked West Liberty On The Road
WEST LIBERTY — The North Cedar Knight volleyball team improved to 8-2 in their last 10 matches including picking up a big River Valley Conference win at West Liberty last Tuesday. There, the Knights upset the 13th ranked Comets (3A) by a 3-1 match score. The win was the Knights fifth straight RVC win after losing to Camanche back in early September.
North Cedar won the first two sets in dominating fashion by twin scores of 25-13 to take a 2-0 match lead. West Liberty won the third set, 25-15 facing a sweep, but North Cedar took the fourth set, 25-21 to end the match and claim the upset.
North Cedar had 47 kills, 89 digs, 44 assists and served 89-for-90 in the match. Darby Hawtrey led with 18 kills and Andrea Wachendorf contributed a season high 13 kills. Sydney Dennis had 37 assists and Taylor Tenley 28 digs to lead North Cedar. North Cedar had 12 blocks in the match by six different players. Darian Gray led with 4 while Hawtrey had 3. Dennis led North Cedar in serving, going 21-for-21 with three aces.
