IOWA CITY — Two Cedar County runners finished in the top-15 overall finishers to earn trips to the state cross-country meet this Saturday in Fort Dodge. Tipton freshman Rachel Bierman placed 14th overall in a time of 22:24 and North Cedar junior Carly Montz finished 11th overall in 22:10 to earn state trips. The duo were two of 11 River Valley Conference runners to qualify for the state meet as individuals out of the top-15. Monticello had five runners place in the top-15 places on their way to a meet win as a team. The Panthers scored a team low 26 points, 53 ahead of the second placed team, Iowa City Regina. Danville narrowly beat out North Cedar to claim the third qualifying team out of the meet. Danville scored 107 points while the Knights scored 109. Tipton placed 5th with 136 team points.
The Tigers nearly had another runner join Bierman at state this week. Fellow freshman Kallie Wallick ran a fantastic race and found herself in a dogfight of an end to the race. There, Monticello’s Emily Schlarmann edged her at the finish line by .43 seconds. Wallick placed 16th in 22:27.44 while Schlarmann placed 15th in 22:27.01. Three Tipton seniors placed in the 30’s with Tiffany Schott placing 31st in 23:52, Zoe Rezac placing 38th in 24:37 and Alyssa Elijah placing 39th in 24:50. Sophomore Ashley Curry placed 44th in 25:07 and freshman Halle McCullough placed 50th in 25:57.
The Knights had three top-30 runners behind Montz. Senior Tessa Fields placed 17th in 22:29, Kiley Chapman placed 21st in 23:07 and Cassie Cox placed 25th in 23:26. Other North Cedar finishers were Grace Proesch 36th, Haley Fall 65th and Karly Cerda 68th.
The state cross-country meet is this Saturday in Fort Dodge Iowa.
