KEOSAUQUA — The Wilton football team knew that to get to a week 9 showdown with Sigourney-Keota, they had to take care of business on the road at Van Buren in week 8. They did. In a big way. The Beavers traveled nearly two and a half hours to face their week eight opponent and came away with a 58-8 drubbing over Van Buren. Van Buren came into the football game 1-6 with their only win in week 1. Wilton, having been ranked this season but unranked in this game, improved to 7-1 overall and 5-1 with the victory. The Beavers are now tied for second place in district 4 with Sigourney-Keota with 5-1 records. The two teams play Friday with the winner securing the second automatic playoff spot out of district 4.
The Beavers scored 40 or more points for the fourth time in seven games this season with the victory. Wilton put up the second most total yards in a game this season with 441.
Wilton scored four times in the first quarter and let 28-8 after the first quarter. The only score given up up in the game by the Beavers came after the first of four first quarter touchdown runs from quarterback Jerome Mays.
Mays started the scoring on the Beavers first possession, scoring on a 57-yard scoring run less than one-minute gone by in the game. The PAT was no good, but Wilton led 6-0. On the ensuing kick-off, Van Buren’s J.T. Metcalf weaved, ducked, and sprinted his way to a 90-yard return for a touchdown. It was the second different Van Buren player to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season. The score and Conner Helling two-point conversion run gave the Warriors an 8-6 lead.
It was all Wilton after that. The Beavers would score touchdowns on their next three possessions that ended in May's’ touchdown runs. Mays rushed for 110 of his 120 yards on four carries in the opening quarter.
Wilton extended their lead to 43-8 at halftime with a Mays to Colin McCrabb 1-yard touchdown pass and a Brian Stillman 26-yard run.
Wilton increased their lead to 50-8 early in the third quarter on a 20-yard Chantz Stevens run. Wilton rounded out their scoring with a Caleb Sawvell 15-yard run with 9:!4 left in the football game.
Individually, Mays led Wilton with 120 yards rushing and 94 passing yards on eight completions. Chantz Stevens rushed for 61 yards and had a touchdown on five carries and Trey Brisker rushed for 39 yards on three carries. Wilton fullback Colin McCrabb played for the first time since early this season and rushed for 53 yards on three carries. Cory Anderson and Brock Hartley each had three receptions. Anderson had 39 receiving yards and Hartley had 34.
Defensively, Wilton was led by Brisker and Calib Lilly who each had 7 tackles. Charles Martin and Tyler Hartman each had six tackles.
Credit also goes to the Beavers offensive line of left tackle Jared Townsend, left guard Tyler Hartman, center Brayton Wade, right guard Clayton Cooling and right tackle Austin Pleggenkuhle as the group of linemen have now paved the way for a team rush total over over 1,000 yards after the 347-yard game. The Beavers also went over 2,500 total yards of offense for the season in the game.
Sigourney-Keota comes to town Friday with a 5-3 overall and 5-1 district record. The Cobras lead district four in team rushing with over 2,500 yards on the ground. S-K has scored 60 or more points twice this season in games and 40 or more points in half of their eight games. The Beavers lead district 4 in total defense and the fewest points allowed with 116 and the unit will be tested Friday night.
Key players will be quarterback Luke Greiner who has passed for 585 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 810 yards and 12 touchdowns. Carson Crawford leads the Cobra rushing attack with 1,324 yards, a 10.1-yard average per carry and 15 touchdowns. Jack Eakins is the leading receiver with 16 receptions for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns. J.D. Stout has caught five passes, two of which have been for touchdowns.
