Dominant Finale, Tigers beat Knights 44-26

STANWOOD — The Tipton Tigers won their last football game of the 2017 last Friday to finish the season 4-5 overall.  The Tigers traveled to Stanwood to renew their rivalry game with North Cedar.  There, the Tigers won 44-26 to win their third straight game over the Knights and also score score at least 40 points in each of those games.  The win gave Tipton a 3-4 district 3 record and 4-5 overall record.  North Cedar fell to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in district 3.
Tipton had a season high 27 first downs in the football game for 570 yards.  The Tigers rushed the football 49 times in the football game for 446 yards.  Two running backs topped 100 yards and another had 88.  Seniors Quinten Mesick rushed for 198 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns.  Fullback Keith Penningroth rushed for a season and career high 131 yards on 22 carries and scored one touchdown.  Connor Hermiston chipped in 88 yards on six carries.
Ben Emrich passed for 124 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Frank Bierman, John Crowley and Penningroth all had two catches.  Bierman had two touchdown catches.
Defensively, Tipton was led by Dylan Mente and Emrich with 8 tackles each.  A trio of Tigers collected seven tackles in Bierman, Lenz and Skylar Harroun.
North Cedar had 331 yards of total offense on 15 first downs.  Shane Weber rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.  Logan Thimmes rushed for 72 yards on nine carries.  Ehtan Sahr passed for 147 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 17 yards on six carries.  Mason Minar caught a team high seven passes for 118 yards.
Defensively, Tyler Thurston led North Cedar in tackles with 15 and Logan Thimmes had 13.  Caden Wendt collected 9 tackles while Greg Hansen had 7 and Mason Minar had 6.
The Tigers say goodbye to a senior class of 8.  Graduating from this year’s team are seniors Blaise Thumma, Ryan Yaukovitz, Ben Emrich, Quinten Mesick, Hunter Tenley, Keith Penningroth, Andrew Roling and Will Avey.
North Cedar got the ball first and scored on their first drive, an 11-play, 60-yard opener that ended with an Ethan Sahr 1-yard run.  The Brody Hawtrey PAT gave North Cedar a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The Tigers answered the Knights drive with a long one of their own.  Tipton strung together a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive ending with a Quinten Mesick 13-yard run to set the score at 7-6 North Cedar.  A Ben Emrich two-point conversion run set the score at 8-7 Tigers.  Tipton would not trail the rest of the game.
Tipton took control of the football game in the second quarter, scoring 29 points to take a 37-14 halftime lead.  North Cedar’s only points came on a 46-yard Shane Weber touchdown run after Tipton took a 30-7 lead.
Tipton scored on four straight possessions in the second quarter.   Mesick scored the first of two second quarter scores from 35 yards out early in the second quarter.  On the next Tipton possession, Mesick scored his third first half touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Ben Emrich and two-point pass from Emrich to Frank Bierman to give Tipton a 22-7 lead.  Keith Penningroth scored on a 2-yard run on the next Tipton possession.  
North Cedar scored their second touchdown of the first half on a Shane Weber 46-yard scoring run to nearly cut the Tigers lead in half, 30-14.  Tipton ended the half leading 37-14 after Emrich threw his second touchdown pass of the first half, a 16-yard strike to Frank Bierman.
North Cedar did outscore the Tigers 12 to 7 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.  North Cedar cut the Tigers lead to 37-20 in the third quarter after a 49-yard touchdown catch by Mason Minar.  Tipton responded early in the fourth quarter, scoirng their final touchdown of the game, a Emrich to Frank Bierman 19-yard scoring play to set the score at 44-20.  North Cedar would tack on a late touchdown, a Weber 8-yard run to get to the final 44-26 score.
