WAPELLO — Coming off of a tough defeat to district 4 leader Iowa City Regina, the Wilton Beavers didn’t want one loss to turn into two losses as they continued district play last week, traveling to Wapello. The Beavers have owned the Indians in their last six meetings, winning all six and scoring at least 34 points in each of those games and averaging 39.3 points in those six wins. The Beavers have been very successful in those years, but even in a down year in 2014 when they were 3-6, Wilton still won against Wapello.
After dodging rain and lightning, the Beavers claimed a 38-13 win to improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in district 4. The Beavers 108 points given up are only second in the district by six points for the leading defense in D4. The Beavers are tied with Sigourney-Keota in district play at 4-1 with two weeks left. The two teams meet in week 9 and if they can each get past week 8 opponents, the winner of that game will claim the second district playoff bid.
Wilton had 333 yards of total offense on 18 first downs in the football game. Wilton racked up 160 yards rushing on 52 carries and had a 3.1-yard average. Offensively, Jerome Mays closed in on 1,000-passing yards for the season, throwing for 173 yards on 11-for-19 attempts. He threw two touchdowns and had two interceptions. Mays now has 846 passing yards with two games left in the regular season. Receiver Cory Anderson went over 400 yards receiving in the win, leading Wilton receivers with six receptions for 72 yards. He is the leading receiver in district 4, leading in receptions (34) and receiving yards (404) through seven weeks. Brock Hartley also had a big game, catching two passes for 78 yards. Ronen Santiago also caught two passes.
The Beavers were led in rushing by Mays who rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries. Two others have at least 30 yards rushing in Chantz Stevens (47) and Trey Sulzberger (34).
Wapello had 209 yards on nine first downs in the game. The Beavers defensive backfield played very well, limiting Wapello senior quarterback, and second leading passer in district 4, to 112 yards through the air. The impressive stat is the Beavers held Belzer to 5 completions in 19 attempts. Of the 112 yards Belzer had, 86 came on one play. So the Beavers held Belzer to 4-of-18 completions for 26 yards the rest of the game. Ricky Pforts led Wapello in rushing with 53 yards on 15 carries.
Wilton used a 14-play drive on their first drive of the football game to score the game's first points, a 7-yard Mays run for a 7-0 lead. On the scoring run, Mays picked up a big block from Trey Sulzberger that sprung him into open field.
Wilton set the tone early defensively on the Indians first drive. The Beavers got a good pass rush all night and on the drive and a Brian Stillman pressure on third down snuffed out the Wapello drive, forcing a punt.
Pouring rain began on Wilton’s second drive on the game. That would lead to a later lightning delay. On the Beavers next drive, Wilton showed off their big play ability. Mays connected with Brock Hartley for a 73-yard touchdown pass. Hartley nearly had his catch broken up by an Indian defensive back, but Hartley maneuvered to catch the football and keep his balance on an arm-tackle attempt trying to sweep his legs out from under him. Hartley then sprinted the rest of the way for the score. The touchdown gave Wilton a 13-0 lead.
Wapello scored their first touchdown on the ensuing drive. Logan Belzer connected with Sam Short on a short gain, but Short used his blocks and broke free for an 86-yard touchdown to set the score at 13-7.
Wilton outscored the Indians 25-6 from that point on. A Mays 1-yard run with 3:19 left before halftime and a Mays to Cory Anderson 20-yard touchdown score put Wilton up 28-7 at halftime. The Beavers would outscored the Indians 10-7 in the second half. The Beavers final score of the football game came on a 38-yard field goal by Jared Townsend with 7:41 left in the game. Townsend leads district 4 in made field goals.
Wilton will travel to Van Buren Friday to face a 1-6 team. Van Buren won their season opener 24-12 over Cardinal of Eldon, but have not tasted victory since. Van Buren’s offense has struggled as they have not scored over 16 points in any of their past six games. Greg Wenke has passed for 445 yards and 4 TD’s and 8 INT’s. He is also their leading rusher with 304 yards and 2 touchdowns. Three Van Buren receivers have over 100 yards receiving, led by J.T. Metcalf with 135 yards, 1 TD and 10 receptions. Defensively, Van Buren is led by Aiden Franklin with 55 tackles.
