CAMANCHE — In one of the most competitive RVC fields for a one night tournament that could be assembled, the River Valley Conference held their championship bracket, single elimination tournament last Thursday at Camanche.  The Indians were the host site after last season Wilton hosted the bracket tournament.  The RVC rotates the bracket tournament each year between the highest North and South teams.
The eight teams reaching Thursday’s championship round were Tipton, Durant, Wilton, North Cedar, Iowa City Regina, Camanche, West Liberty and Bellevue.  Five of the eight schools were from the 7-team South Division.  Of the eight teams reaching the bracket play, single elimination tournament five were ranked in the latest Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s state rankings.  In class 2A, Iowa City Regina is ranked #11, Wilton #12 and North Cedar #13.  In class 3A, Tipton is ranked #8 and West Liberty is ranked #13.  The final four of the tournament bracket were all ranked teams with match ups of Camanche against Iowa City Regina and Tipton against Wilton.
The Tigers opened the tournament part of the RVC tournament in the quarterfinals against Durant a team that game them all they could handle in a 3-2 win at Durant on September 28.  In the quarterfinals, Tipton wasted little time sidelining Durant by scores of 21-12 in the first set and 21-6 in the second set.  Durant had quite a run in the RVC Tournament, upsetting 15th ranked 3A foe Monticello and nearly beating 2A #12 Wilton in the same pool play.
Tipton had 17 kills on 44 attacks.  Sommer Daniel had 7, Blake Ehler 4 and Kamryn Chapman and Jamie Kofron 2 each.  Amanda Smith led in assists with 11 and Daniel led in digs with 6 while Ehler had 4.  Tipton served 35-for-40 as a team with 6 aces.  Smith was the top Tipton server, going 11-for-11 with 2 aces.  Ehler was next, going 8-for-9 with an ace.  Tipton also had seven blocks in the match as a team.
Durant had six kills in the match with Kamryn Meyer having 2.  Ruby Kappeler had 6 assists and Hannah Happ had 4 digs to lead Durant.  Durant served 16-for-19 as a team with an ace serve.  The Wildcats will play Wapello Tuesday with the winner of that playing at Wilton on October 23.
In the semifinals, Tipton played Wilton, a team they beat in Wilton 3-2 earlier in the season.  The Tigers and Beavers battled in a close match, but this time, Wilton came out on top, 2-1.  Wilton won the first set 25-22, but Tipton won the second set handily, 25-8.  The Beavers regrouped and won the third set, 15-8 to claim the match and advance to the finals.
Tipton had 33 kills in the match on 116 attacks.  Sommer Daniel had 11 kills and three others had at least five kills with Amanda Smith getting 6 and Kamryn Chapman and Blake Ehler each getting 5.  Smith led in assists with 15 while Daniel had 11.  Ehler led in digs with 19.  Tipton served 48-for-56 with 5 aces as a team.  Jamie Kofron led Tipton, going 16-for-17 with 2 aces in the match.
Wilton had 26 kills in the match on 60 attacks.  Aubrey Putman had 14 and Kortney Drake 4.  Kallie Poor had 21 assists and 7 digs and Drake led in digs with 14.  Wilton served 42-for-47 with 2 aces in the match.
The Wilton Beavers reached the finals of the tournament for the second straight year.  The Beavers beat Bellevue 2-1 in the quarterfinals, Tipton 2-1 in the semifinals before losing to Camanche in the finals 2-0.  Wilton beat both Camanche and Bellevue on the road in the regular season by a match score of 3-2.
Against the Comets, Wilton won the second set 21-15 to even up the match at 1-1 after the Comets won the first set 21-14.  Wilton then took a very close third set, 15-13 to claim the match.
Aubrey Putman had 15 of the 29 kills Wilton had in the match.  She also had nine digs.  Kortney Drake had 5 kills, a team high 16 digs and served 9-for-10.  Kallie Poor had 25 assists, 10 digs and served 8-for-8 with an ace.  Wilton served 49-for-51 in the match.  Lexi Maurer and Kali Milder each were 11-for-11 in the match to lead Wilton.
Against the Tigers, Wilton survived a spirited second set win by the Tigers to get a 2-1 win in the semifinals.  The Beavers won the first set 25-22, but lost 25-8 in the second set.  Wilton took control early in the third set, winning the set 15-8 to claim the match.  The Tigers beat the Beavers 3-2 in the regular season.
Aubrey Putman had her second straight match with over 10 kills, leading Wilton with 14 on 35 attacks.  She had 6 digs and served 10-for-11.  Kortney Drake led Wilton in digs with 14 while Lexi Maurer and Kali Milder each had 13 digs and Poor had 35 assists.  Wilton served 42-for-47 in the match.
That win put the Beavers in the championship match against Camanche.  There, Wilton fell in both sets to the Indians by scores of 25-20 and 25-17 to finish second for the second straight season.  North Cedar beat the Beavers on their home floor last year to claim the tournament title.  The Indians played and beat three ranked teams to claim the title in West Liberty, Iowa City Regina and Wilton.  The loss also snapped a 13-match win streak by the Beavers.
Kortney Drake had a team high 11 kills and Putman had 9.  Poor had 19 assists and 8 digs to lead Wilton.  Wilton was 38-for-39 with two aces as a team.  Wilton will have some time off before beginning postseason play.  The Beavers open on October 23 at home and wait for the winner of Durant vs. Wapello to see who they will play.
The North Cedar Knights played their quarterfinal match against the host Indians in the quarterfinals and lost in two sets.  The Knights played Camanche twice early in the season, losing both times.  The Knights lost 2-1 at the Maquoketa Tournament on August 26 and five days later at home 3-0 in a RVC conference match.
Last Thursday, North Cedar gave the Indians a good fight in a first set loss 21-18.  The Indians did not allow the Knights to keep their little bit of momentum in the second set, beating North Cedar 21-12 to claim the match 2-0.  North Cedar will be back on the court tonight at home in the first round of the class 2A tournament against Alburnett.  If North Cedar wins they would play at Lisbon in round two, October 23.
North Cedar had 21 kills on 69 attacks in the match and had just five hitting errors.  Darby Hawtrey had 8 kills and Darian Gray 7 to lead North Cedar.  Sydney Dennis led in assists with 14.  Nicole Sander and Taylor Tenley each had 9 digs and Sander was the Knights top server in the match, going 9-for-9 with two aces.  North Cedar had 16 blocks in the match.
