TIPTON — Two of the top-three teams in the River Valley Conference met in Tipton last Thursday in a highly anticipated match up. Both teams were ranked in the top-5 of Class 3A. The top-ranked Tigers came in looking to go 4-0 in the RVC, while No. 5 West Liberty looked to snap a two-match losing streak and keep pace in the RVC. The Comets already owned a 3-1 loss at 2A No. 5 Wilton earlier in the week. It was the Comets though, that would take a 3-0 sweep over the Tigers.
The victory for the Comets snapped a five-match win streak by THS dating back to 2016. The last West Liberty victory came on October 1, 2015. The Tigers had swept the Comets in each of the past two regular-season matches in 2018 and 2017.
The Comets won the first set 25-17 after leading 13-5 at one point. The Tigers tried to rally, matching the Comets 12 points over the rest of the set, but it wasn’t enough to draw closer. The Tigers led briefly in the second set, but could not pull away. The Comets would take a commanding 2-0 match lead, winning the second set 29-27. The Comets didn’t let Tipton get back in the match in the third set, taking the set 25-9 to complete the sweep.
Tipton had 26 kills in 98 attacks. Sommer Daniel had 10 kills and Kamryn Chapman 9 for Tipton. Daniel had 10 assists and Alex Hoffman had seven. Carly Puffer had 12 digs and Karlee Kamberling had nine. The Tigers block total was seven. Tipton served 49-for-53 with four aces.
West Liberty had 42 kills on 69 attack attempts. Macy Daufeldt and Martha Pace each had double digit kill totals to lead West Liberty with 14 and 12. Isabel Morrison was close to double digits with eight. West Liberty senior Morgan Peterson who has over 1,000 assists in her career, led West Liberty with 25 assists. Monica Morales, a freshman, led the Comets with 19 digs. As a team West Liberty turned in their best match at the net with 9 blocks. Pace had four, Morrison 3, and Daufeldt two. The Comets served well in the match, going 70-for-79 with eight ace serves. Martha Pace went 18-for-19 with two aces and Madison McIntosh was 16-for-17 with four aces to lead West Liberty.
The match featured some of the best volleyball players in the River Valley Conference. Tipton’s Sommer Daniel came in first in kills with 152 while West Liberty’s Macy Daufeldt was second with 145. West Liberty’s Morgan Peterson came in leading in assists with 268 while Daniel was second with 195 and Alex Hoffman third with 178. Carly Puffer and Kamryn Chapman were first and second in blocks with 44 and 29. Karlee Kamberling led in digs with 184 and Monica Morales from West Liberty second with 156.
The Comets have RVC matches against South foes Durant, Mid-Prairie, and Iowa City Regina. The Comets will play Bellevue and North Cedar from the RVC North in cross-division play.
Tipton plays at 2A No. 5 Wilton Tuesday in another big match up. The Tigers also play West Branch. Tipton has two cross-division matches left against Monticello and Camanche.

Tigers Stay unbeaten in RVC Play
WELLMAN — The Tipton volleyball team won their fifth straight regular-season RVC match against Mid-Prairie after beating the Golden Hawks 3-0 last Tuesday in Wellman. The Tigers win marked the fourth straight year that THS has swept Mid-Prairie in RVC regular-season matches.
Tipton was not challenged in the match, winning the first set 25-11, the second set 25-12, and the third set 25-9. The victory was the Tigers fourth straight. Tipton improved to 3-0 in the RVC with the win.
Tipton had 36 kills in the match. Kamryn Chapman led THS with 11 while Sommer Daniel and Grace Nichols each had seven. Alex Hoffman had 16 assists and Sommer Daniel 13. Karlee Kambreling had 13 digs. The Tigers had eight team blocks with Carly Puffer leading with three and Nichols and Chapman each with two. Tipton served 65-for-73 in the match with eight aces. Chapman led, going 19-for-20 with three aces. Kamberling was 15-for-17 with two aces.
