Tigers sweep their way through Lisbon

LISBON - The Tipton volleyball team began their season at the Lisbon Tournament, a place that they have dominated in the past seasons. This year was no different as the Tigers began the new season 4-0 with four wins at the one-night event. The Tigers will be back in action this week twice, opening River Valley Conference play Thursday at Iowa City Regina, and then by traveling to Mount Vernon for a weekend tournament.

The Tigers graduated six seniors and almost half of their starting rotation from a 39-4 team that was the runners-up in Class 3A.

“We have some core players back,” said Tipton volleyball coach Amy Calonder. “We also have kids coming up this year that played with and against the seniors from last year and they got better themselves to get in position to step up this year,” she said.

Calonder said she was happy with her team getting better with each match.

“We were super happy with how we played. We got better as the matches went on. The more they play, the more confident they get. We set our goals and we want to get better every time out and blend as a team,” she said.

The Tigers totaled 84 kills as a team and had 27 ace serves on 200 attempts. The Tigers also had 31 total blocks in four matches. The block total was six more than the 2018 Tigers got at last year’s Lisbon Tournament.

Tipton will look to employ bigger lineups at times to take advantage of possible mismatches up front.

“We have a lot of big lineups. We feel like we have gotten better at blocking as a team. We have to keep working though,” said Calonder.

Tipton beat Alburnett, East Buchanan, BGM, and Clayton Ridge all by 2-0 match scores. The Tigers beat Alburnett by set scores of 25-11 and 25-15. The Tigers beat East Buchanan by set scores of 25-16 and 25-22. The Tigers beat BGM by set scores of 25-7 and 25-12. The Tigers beat Clayton Ridge by scores of 25-12 and 25-16. The Tigers and Lisbon were both 4-0 at the tournament. BGM, Clayton Ridge, East Buchanan, and Alburnett were all 1-3.

Sommer Daniel led four Tigers with double-digit kill totals at the tournament with 27 in 56 attacks. Fellow senior Kamryn Chapman had 18 kills followed by sophomore Carly Puffer with 15 and junior Kelley Lieser with 10. Grace Nichols was close to double digits, getting 9 kills in the four matches. Carley Puffer and Karlee Kamerberling led THS in serving. Puffer was 39-for-42 with six ace serves and Kamberling was 35-for-41 with 7 ace serves.

Junior Alex Hoffman takes a setter spot opened up due to the graduation of 2019 senior Amanda Smith. Hoffman had quite an opening run of matches, totaling 46 assists with a 5.75-assists per set average. Daniel had 17 assists. Kamberling led in digs with 30 while three others had 10 or more for the four matches. Puffer led Tipton with 10 blocks while Kelley Lieser had 8 and Grace Nichols had 5.

The preseason Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s volleyball rankings were released late last week. The Tigers begin the season ranked No. 3 in Class 3A. Mount Vernon is the top-ranked team in 3A followed by 2018 Class 3A champion Carroll Kuemper. West Liberty is also ranked in the 3A Top-10 as is Wilton but in Class 2A.
