Knights WIn At Home, Move To 2-1

STANWOOD — The North Cedar Knights are over the .500 mark. To do that, they had to take a hard-fought 21-7 game at home against Camanche last Friday. The Knights are over the .500 mark for the first time since the 2014 season. That year they were 9-2 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. North Cedar’s only win last season came at home, a 53-24 win against Columbus Junction. Until the win Friday, North Cedar has only won two home games combined since the 2015 season.

Camanche got the football first and crossed mid-field on their second play of the game. However, two plays later, the Knights got a big turnover when Kael Unruh picked off a Jordan Lawrence pass at the 27-yard line and returned it seven yards. North Cedar then marched 66 yards down the field in 12 plays to score the first points of the game. Senior quarterback Ethan Sahr connected with receiver Gage Walshire on a 13-yard touchdown pass to give North Cedar a 7-0 lead with 4:44 left in the opening quarter. Sahr was 4-for-5 for 54 yards passing the football on the drive.

The score would hold until the second quarter. There, North Cedar extended their lead to 14-0 with 7:38 left before halftime on Sahr’s second touchdown pass of the game. This one went 35 yards to Unruh. It was just the second North Cedar possession of the game, and the scoring drive spanned 13 plays.

Neither team scored in the third quarter as the score remained 14-0 North Cedar heading to the fourth. Each team would score a touchdown in the final quarter. Camanche scored their only points of the game with 9:30 left in the game on a 5-yard Cade Everson run to trim the Knights lead to 14-7. The Indians would get a chance to tie the game on the ensuing North Cedar drive. The Knights fumbled the football and Camanche recovered two plays into their ensuing offensive possession. Camanche however, could not convert a 4th and 12 situation, turning the back over to North Cedar. The Knights would need just eight plays to put the game out of reach. Sahr tossed a short pass out of the backfield to Brody Hawtrey, who juked and jived his way to a 29-yard touchdown pass, giving North Cedar a two-score lead, 21-7 with 2:09 left in the game. A desperation throw by Lawrence was intercepted by Unruh inside the Knight 10-yard line, securing the victory.

North Cedar rushed for 124 yards in the game. Brody Hawtrey rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries. It was the second straight week he has topped the 100-yard rushing mark. Ethan Sahr passed for a season-best 196 yards on 12-for-16 completions with 3 touchdown passes. He topped the 500-yard passing mark through three games with 546 total yards. Gage Walshire had a season-high six receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown to lead the Knight receiving stats.

Defensively, North Cedar was led in tackles by Walshire with 8 and James Garner with 7. Walshire also had two tackles for loss. Caden Wendt had 4 tackles for loss. Unruh had three interceptions for 13 return yards. Hawtrey had a sack and Sabian Mesinas had a fumble recovery.
