Knights Score Big Win In Durant

DURANT — On paper, there is no reason why North Cedar should not hold their own in a 2019 football game. The starters for North Cedar can stack up with anyone. Depth is the issue, however. In week one, the Knights were wore down by Tipton in a season-opening loss. Friday, the Knights matched up better with Durant, a team also with lower numbers. Friday, the Knights came up big with a 24-22 win over the Wildcats.

North Cedar scored on back-to-back first-half possessions to take an early 14-0 lead. Brody Hawtrey scored first on a 4-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and an Ethan Sahr 49-yard scoring pass to Kael Unruh was for the Knights second touchdown. After Hawtrey’s two-point conversion run, the Knights led 14-0. Durant trimmed the Knights lead by halftime 14-6 after Kegan Head threw the first of two touchdown passes in the game to Jake Willkomm for 25 yards.

North Cedar led 16-14 heading to the final quarter. Durant took a 22-16 lead late in the final quarter on a 10-yard run by Nolan DeLong. DeLong caught a two-point conversion pass to set the score at 22-16. North Cedar responded and scored the go-ahead and what would end up being the winning touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Knights took the lead for good on a Brody Hawtrey 3-yard run and Hawtrey 2-point conversion run to set the score at its final of 24-22.

Durant tied the game on their first possession of the second half. Head tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, a 31-yard scoring play to Nolan DeLong. After a Jake Willkomm 2-point conversion catch, the score was knotted at 14.

Ethan Sahr had a good game throwing 119 yards on 7-for-13 attempts with a touchdown. Kael Unruh was the Knights top receiver with four receptions for 75 yards and touchdown. Brody Hawtrey rushed for 165 yards on 35 carries and scored two touchdowns. Defensively, Gage Walshire and Tyler Thurston led North Cedar in tackles with six.

Durant quarterback Keagan Head passed for 194 yards on 15-of-24 attempts and two touchdowns. Head added 55 yards rushing. The Knights defense held Durant freshman Nolan DeLong to 11 yards on five carries a week after DeLong rushed for 95 yards on 22 carries. Defensively Marcus Engstler led with 14 tackles while Brian Graves and Nolan DeLong each had 11.

Durant fell to 1-1 while North Cedar improved to 1-1. The Knights host Camanche Friday while Durant travels to Tipton.
