MAQUOKETA — The North Cedar Knights began the 2019 season playing ve matches at the Maquoketa volleyball tournament on Saturday, August 31st. The Knights played matches against DeWitt, Maquoketa, North Cedar and RVC North teams Northeast and Camanche. The Knights beat Northeast, DeWitt and Camanche and fell to North Scott and Maquoketa. The Knights have another busy week ahead. North Cedar will open their RVC season Thursday, Septem- ber 5 at home against Monti- cello. The Knights play at the Mount Vernon tournament Saturday.
North Cedar was 4-1 at last year’s tournament with wins over Northeast, DeWitt, Maquoketa, and North Scott. The Knights lost to Camanche last year.
North Cedar began the tournament with a win over DeWitt 2-0. The Knights won the first set 21-13 and the second set 21- 14. The Knights had 18 kills in 45 attacks led by Jenna Syring with 6 while Emma Boelyn and Andrea Wachendorf each had 4. Sydney Dennis had 15 assists and Kassidie Galloway led the team with 11 digs and in serving, going 16-for-16 with an ace serve. The Knights got an early look at two upcoming River Valley Conference foes. North Cedar played Camanche and Northeast at the tournament. The Knights play Northeast September 17 and Camanche two days later on September 19. Both matches are on the road.
After beating DeWitt, North Cedar beat Northeast, 2-0. North Cedar dominated the match, winning the rst set 21-8 and the second set 21-14. North Cedar had 27 kills in the two-set match win. Three players had 11 or more attack attempts. Andrea Wachendorf had 10 kills and Jenna Syring 7 to lead the way. Sydney Dennis had 21 assists and Kassidie Galloway had 8 digs. North Cedar served 32-for-38 with two aces in the match. Carly Meier led the Knights going 9-for-11. The Knights also beat Camanche in two sets. Scores were 21-12 in the first set and 21-18 in the second set. North Cedar had 20 kills in 49 attack attempts. Andrea Wachendorf and Jenna Syring tied for the team-high in kills with 5 each. Sydney Dennis had 17 assists and led North Cedar in serving, going 8-for-8 with an ace serve.
Against Maquoketa, North Cedar lost 2-0. Maquoketa won the first set 21-13 and the second set, 21-15. North Cedar had 14 kills in the match led by Jenna Syring with 5. Sydney Dennis had 10 assists and Kassidie Galloway had 7 digs to lead North Cedar. The Knights served 27-for-30 as a team with three aces. Averee Kasik led the Knights, going 8-for-9 with an ace.
North Scott was the only ranked team at the tournament. The Lancers are ranked No. 9 in Class 4A. Against the Knights, North Cedar fell 2-0. The Lancers won the rst set 21-7 and the second set 21-16. North Cedar had 12 kills led by Emma Boe- lyn with 4 and Andrea Wachendorf with 3. Sydney Dennis had 9 assists and Kassidie Galloway had 7 digs.
