Durant beats Wilton for rst time since ‘99

WILTON — The Wilton football team has dominated its chief rival for the past two decades. The Beavers have won every game dating back to the 1999 season. This year’s Wildcats shutout the Beavers 24-0 to pick up their first win. Durant will host North Cedar this Friday while Wilton will travel to Northeast.

The two schools played twice in the 1999 season. Normally, schools play only once, but that year, Central Lee canceled their last four games for the year, giving forfeit wins to district foes. Central Lee was in Durant’s district. Wilton also had a game canceled due to a forfeit in the last month of the season. Durant trailed early 8-6, but would score 16 second-quarter points to take a 22-8 lead. Each team scored six third-quarter points before Durant closed with 12 fourth-quarter points to win 40-14. Ryan Buhman led Durant in rushing with 123 yards on 29 carries. Nathan Hermiston passed for 318 yards and four touchdowns on 16-of-31 attempts and Brock Bockwoldt caught seven passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns and Cody Remley caught four passes for 84 yards and two scores.

Earlier in the year, Wilton beat Durant 32-13, scoring all 32 points in the first (13) and last (19) quarters. Durant was looking for their first win of the season. Wilton led 13-7 after the first quarter and 13-13 in the fourth quarter before scoring the final 19 points. Ryan Buhman led Durant in rushing with 25 yards on 16 carries. Nathan Hermiston was 11-for-22 for 131 yards passing and Jim Pacha and Jeremy Timmerman led the Wildcat receivers. Luke Edwards had a team-best 7 tackles.

The previous year, 1998, Durant picked up their first win of the season with a 20-12 win over Wilton. That game saw running backs Nathan Sawvell from Wilton and Eric Hart from Durant battle on the gridiron. Sawvell would rush for 228 yards and two touchdowns while Hart would finish with 167 yards and three touchdowns. The final score came in the fourth quarter to break a 12-12 tie. The Wildcats got a two-point conversion, a Steve DeLong pass to Kyle Meincke to give Durant the 20-12 win. DeLong rushed for and passed for 30 yards. Meincke caught three passes for 27 yards.

The DeLong brothers caused Wilton all kinds of problems in the game. Nolan a freshman and Drew a senior combined to rush for 254 of the Wildcats 309 yards rushing in the game. Nolan DeLong had quite a game. He led Durant in rushing with 159 yards on 14 carried and he caught a pass for 27 yards and a touchdown. Defensively he had six tackles and four tackles for loss and four sacks. Brother Drew had a night of his own. Drew DeLong rushed for 95 yards on a team-high 22 carries.

Durant had 19 first downs in the game and 385 yards of total offense on 55 plays. Keagan Head made his varsity debut at quarterback and passed for 60 yards and rushed for 10 yards. Defensively, Joe Lilienthal, Ben Orr, and Nolan DeLong each had 6 tackles to lead Durant.

Wilton had 130 yards on 47 plays. Wilton rushed for 72 yards on 28 carries. Jackson Hull rushed for 46 yards on eight carries in his first varsity start. Mason Ormsby passed for 58 yards and rushed for 19 yards on 18 carries. He also was making his first varsity start. Colby Sawvell led Wilton receivers with five catches for 51 yards.

Durant scored twice in the first quarter to take control of the football game. Both touchdowns came within two minutes of the game clock. Durant scored the game's first points with 8:33 left in the opening quarter on a 27-yard pass from Head to Nolan DeLong to give Durant a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing Wilton drive, Tevin Miller intercepted a Mason Ormsby pass and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown and a 12-0 lead. That score held until the third when Head tossed a 33-yard scoring pass to Jake Willkomm to set the score at 18-0. Head would score the games final points with 6:15 left to play on a 1-yard scoring run.
