VINTON — Four turnovers and a rough first half o ensively kept the Tigers from starting 2-0 for the first time since the 2015 season. Tipton fell to 0-2 after falling 36 to 22 at Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday. The Tigers beat the Vikings by ten points, 27-17 last year at home. The Tigers played in their second straight road game to start the season and will play at home in the rst of ve home games this season when they host Durant.
The Tigers offense did not produce in the first half as the Tigers ran only 11 plays and picked up 33 yards of offense. Vinton-Shellsburg conversely, ran 42 plays and totaled 220 yards. The Vikings led 23-0 at halftime. The Tigers had four offensive drives in the first half and had to punt after the first two. Tipton fumbled on their third offensive possession and the rst half ran out while the Tigers were in the middle of their fourth first-half possession. The Vikings scored points on four of their five possessions to take the three-score lead.
The Vikings got the football first in the game and put together a 12-play, 65-yard drive ending with a Brooks Erickson scoring pass to Sam Griffth on a third and goal from the Tigers 18-yard line. The touchdown set the score at 7-0. Tipton had to punt on their first possession after 6-plays and 18 yards. On the second Viking drive, V-S scored on a 33-yard Erickson touchdown pass to C.J. Rickels on a 4th and 1 from the Tigers 33-yard line to extend their lead to 13-0.
As the second quarter started, the Tigers defense held and after stopping a fake punt by the Vikings, Tipton was deep in Vikings territory. Two plays later the Vikings defense forced a fumble by Frank Bierman to regain possession of the football. The Vikings would turn the turnover into points on a 38-yard Luke Beyer field goal with 23 seconds left in the first half and a 16-0 lead. The Vikings caught the Tigers off guard and recovered an onside kick. Two plays later, a 41-yard Erickson pass and another scoring pass from Erickson to Rickels set the score at 23-0 at halftime.
The Tiger’s second half fortunes were better at the start. Tipton got the football first and marched down the field in 12 plays to score their first touchdown, an Austin Lenz 2-yard run to set the score at 23-8 after a Blake Wilkins 2-point conversion run. The Tiger’s special teams, however, could not stop the Vikings from getting a big kickoff return on the ensuing kick to set up a short eld. Not long after the Vikings scored on an Erickson 4-yard scoring run. After a PAT kick, Vinton-Shellsburg led 30-8. Vinton-Shellsburg scored first in the final quarter to extend their lead to 36-8. Forced to pass to try to score quick, had a couple of turnovers in the second half as quarterback Blake Wilkins was intercepted twice. The Tigers were able to move the football on two fourth-quarter possessions, both ending on Austin Lenz touchdown runs to trim the Vikings lead to two scores, 36-22, but could get no closer.
Austin Lenz rushed for 76 yards and had three touchdowns on 11 carries. Blake Wilkins passed for 86 yards on four completions and added 60 rushing yards on 14 carries. Frank Bierman caught two passes for 50 yards and rushed for 45 yards on seven carries. Defensively, Connor Hermiston led Tipton in tackles with 11 while Kaleb Nerem had eight, Nile Schuett seven and Lake Anderson and Collin Chambliss with six each.
The Tigers fall to 1-1 and fell out of the Class 2A rankings. The Tigers were ranked No. 9 by the Des Moines Register after their week one, 34-0 win at North Cedar. Tipton will host Durant. The Wildcats are also 1-1 and also fell out of the Des Moines Register rankings, but in Class A, after a 24-22 home loss to North Cedar.
