Beavers can’t slow S-K in district opener

SIGOURNEY — The Wilton Beavers have formed a rivalry with Sigourney-Keota. The Beavers and Savage Cobras met in the first Wilton football playoff game ever in the mid-2000s. Last Friday, Wilton and the Savage Cobras met in the district opener for both teams. It would be a fine rushing attack by S-K and lightning that was too much to overcome for Wilton in a 40-6 loss.
Wilton fell to 1-4 and 0-1 in district play. The Beavers will be at home for the next two weeks. Wapello will come to Wilton this Friday with Wilton hosting Mediapolis on October 11. Sigourney-Keota stayed unbeaten with the win, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in district play. The Savage Cobras travel to Van Buren Friday.
With some teams moving their week 5 games 24 hours ahead or even a couple of hours ahead of last Friday, the Beavers and Savage Cobras kicked off at the normal 7 p.m. start time. The weather would turn though as delays due to lightning caused the game to be called in the third quarter.
Sigourney-Keota senior JD Stout had four first-half touchdown runs to help S-K get a 34-6 halftime lead. Stout had touchdown runs of 54 and 30 in the first quarter to give S-K a 14-0 lead. Wilton scored their only touchdown in the first quarter when Mason Ormsby found receiver Colby Sawvell for a 74-yard touchdown pass. That set the score at 14-6. S-K would score 34 unanswered points the rest of the game.
The last two Sigourney-Keota touchdowns came on the defensive side of the football on an interception return and a fumble recovery. The interception return was one of three second-quarter touchdowns for the Cobras. The game was called in the third quarter after weather delays for lightning.
Wilton had 219 yards of total offense in the game with 186 passing and 33 rushing yards. Jackson Hull led Wilton on the ground, rushing for 59 yards on 10 carries for a 5.9-yard average. Mason Ormsby passed for 186 yards and a touchdown. Colby Sawvell caught six passes for 147 yards. Sawvell now has 28 receptions for 408 yards on the season. Ormsby now has 708 yards passing on the season.
The Beaver defense allowed no passing yards in the game. It was the second time this season that S-K has not had any passing yards in a game. The other was a 34-14 season-opening win at Pekin. Kael Brisker led Wilton tacklers with seven.
Sigourney-Keota has scored 34 or more points in each of their five games this year. They have scored over 50 points three times in five games with a high of 75 points in a 75-27 win over Albia on September 13. JD Stout led Sigourney-Keota in rushing with 190 yards on 14 carries. Sam Sieren rushed for 48 yards on eight carries.
