Tigers run at loaded Solon Invitational

 SOLON — Both Tipton cross-country teams had their work cut out for them at the Solon Invitational on Monday, September 23. Each varsity division had five ranked teams among the scoring teams. The Tiger boys would navigate the ranked teams and place as runners-up on the boy’s side, while the Tiger girls would place ninth out of ten scoring teams.
 On the boy’s side, Tipton placed second to Iowa City Liberty. The Lightning are ranked as a team to watch in Class 4A and scored 30 points. The Tigers, remain ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, and placed second with 45 points. Tipton had three runners in the top-5 finishers. Caleb Shumaker won the race in a time of 16:44 followed by Trent Pelzer fourth in 17:25, and Jackson Edens fifth in 17:34. Other THS finishers were Landan Hill 16th, Andrew Olseen 19th, Cody Bohlmann 20th, and Ty Nichols 40th.
 Tipton placed second in the junior varsity race too, scoring 52 points. Three Tipton runners placed in the top-10. A.J. Thumma was second in 18:07 followed by Troy Butler, sixth in 18:51, and Dalton Esbaum, seventh in 19:00.
 Other ranked teams in the boy’s field were Class 2A No. 4 Williamsburg and No. 7 Mid-Prairie, and Class 3A Mount Vernon-Lisbon who is ranked No. 15 in Class 3A.
 On the girl’s side, 11th ranked Class 4A Bettendorf won the meet with a team score of 49. The top-4 girl’s teams finishing were ranked, teams. Class 2A No. 1 and No. 2 were second and third in the team standings with 65 and 84 points. Class 3A No. 11 Solon was fourth with 100 points. The Tigers placed ninth with 228 points.
 Tipton had three runners place in the top-50 runners. Junior Kallie Wallick placed 28th in a time of 21:56. Alyssa Mente placed 42nd in a time of 22:51 and Coryn Wallick placed 49th in 23:30. Liz Bierman ran for the Tigers in the junior varsity race. She finished in 30:40.
 The Tiger cross-country teams wait to see where they will be running for their state qualifying meet this month. Sites for Class 2A are Dike-New Hartford, North Fayette Valley, Panorama, Unity Christian, and Williamsburg.
 Of those, Williamsburg and Dike-New Hartford are the only sites in Eastern Iowa and likely spots Tipton could and will run at.
