Tigers leave no doubt, they are RVC’s best


Tigers Are RVC Champions For 2019!
IOWA CITY — For the first time in the seven-year existence of the River Valley Conference, the top boy’s cross-country team is in Tipton. The Tigers made a statement to the conference and the rest of Class 2A, winning the premier leagues’ title last week in Iowa City. Tipton dominated at the meet scoring a team-low point total of 31 to claim the title. That total is the second-lowest all-time at an RVC meet. Monticello won the 2013 title with 28 points. The Tigers are also the only second RVC South school to claim an RVC title. Mid- Prairie won the title in 2016, but other than that, RVC North schools have won. Monticello won in 2013 and 2015 and Bellevue won in 2014 and 2017. There was not RVC Meet in 2018.

Tipton junior Caleb Shumaker won the individual River Valley Conference title, placing first at the race in a time of 16:47. The race featured a battle of the top-3 individual runners inClass2A. Shumaker came into the meet ranked No. 3 while Camanche’s Dylan Darsidan was ranked No. 1 and Bellevue’s Brady Griebel was ranked No. 2. All three are juniors. In the RVC race, Darsidan placed second in 16:52, ve seconds behind Shumaker, and Griebel placed third in 16:59, 12 seconds behind Shumaker.

The Tigers came into the RVC meet o of back-to-back third-place finishes at the conference meet in 2016 and 2017 to set their then highest finish at an RVC meet. The Tigers placed fourth at the rst RVC meet in 2013 and sixth in 2014 and 2015.

All seven Tipton runners placed in the top-20 finishers. Three other THS runners placed in the top-10 to earn Elite All-Conference honors. Senior Trent Pelzer placed third in 17:30. Pelzer is ranked No. 8 in Class 2A. Senior Jackson Edens placed sixth in 17:46. Edens is ranked No. 12 in 2A. Tipton senior Andrew Olseen continued his run of recent high finishes, placing eighth in 17:57. Three other Tigers placed high enough to earn all-conference honors. Cody Bohlmann placed 12th in 18:10, Landan Hill placed 16th in 18:20, and A.J. Thumma placed 18th in 18:22 to earn the honors.

The top-4 teams in the team standings are ranked in Class 2A. Tipton took the RVC title with 31 points. The Tigers are ranked No. 1 in 2A. Monticello was second with 70 team points. The Panthers are ranked No. 3 in 2A. Camanche placed third with 123 points. The Indians are ranked No. 11 in 2A. Mid-Prairie placed fourth with 134 points. The Golden Hawks are ranked No. 8 in 2A, Junior varsity teams ran with the varsity teams at the meet. Most of the Tiger's junior varsity team finished in the top-100 runners. Leading the way was Ty Nichols with a 21st place finish in 18:39. Troy Butler placed 35th in 19:10, Bob Ryan placed 44th in 19:50, and Dalton Esbaum placed 50th in 19:53. Other Tipton finishers were Craig Sha er 67th, Brody Deerberg 76th, Zach Fisher 84th, Caleb Jedlicka 85th, Tiger Emrich 88th, Gavin Belitz 120th, and Joey Chiu 151st.

Wilton placed 10th as a team with 263 team points. The Beavers had placed 9th at the previous four RVC meets. The Beavers's best RVC finish was 8th in the first year of the RVC in 2013. Wilton was led by one all-conference runner. Senior Zach Hein placed 15th to earn conference honors. He n- ishedtheracein18:16. EthanBailey placed 42th in 19:33 and Jake Walton placed 63rd in 20:18. Other Wilton finishers were Gavin Reid 102nd, Chayton Ramsey 103rd, Connor Bier- man 134th, and Colby Brown 142nd. Durant placed 12th at the meet with a teamscoreof319. It is the first time the Wildcats have not placed in the top-10 in the team race since 2014 meet when they placed 10th. Drake Shelangoski led Durant runners with a 31st place finish in 18:58. Nathan Moomey also placed in the top-50 with a 43rd place finish in 19:43. Oth- er Durant finishes came from Colyn Dean 108th, Michael Frisch 121st, and Luke Abels 154th.

North Cedar scored 365 points to place 13th. North Cedar was led by Jacob Spahr’s 68th place finish in 20:24 and Sam Choate’s 86th place finish in 21:00. Other North Cedar finishers were 100th Milo Easterly, 111th David Redhage, 125th Chance Cinkovich, 146th Marshall VanOort, 156th Ryan Spahr, and 157. Leighton Tjaden.

Postseason destinations are set
The postseason is set for area cross- country teams. Statequalifyingmeets will be this week on Thursday. The top three teams will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 2 at Lakeside Golf and Country Club in Fort Dodge.

In Class 2A, RVC schools are spread out over two locations. AtNorthFayette Valley, RVC schools there are Tipton, Camanche, and Bellevue. At Dike-New Hartford, Monticello is the only RVC school there. At Williams- burg, RVC schools there are Mid-Prai- rie and West Liberty.

In class 1A, many RVC teams will run in Iowa City for their state qualifying meets at the Iowa City Kicker’s Complex where this year’s RVC meet was held. There are Cascade, Durant, North Cedar, Iowa City Regina, and Wilton.
