Wildcats clinch second straight winning season

 DURANT — The Durant Wildcats nished o the 2019 season with a 21-14 home win over perennial power Pekin on Friday, October 25. The win gave the Wildcats their second straight winning season and a 5-4 overall record this year. The Wildcats nish the district season 3-2, good for third place. The Wildcats scored 182 points this season and gave up 146 points.

 Durant led 14-7 at halftime. A Keagan Head touchdown pass to Tony Dillabough for 12 yards in the rst quarter gave Durant a 7-0 lead with 5:21 left in the opening quarter. Pekin tried to answer the Wildcat score, driving to the Wildcats 9-yard line, but Durant got a big goal line stand to get the ball back after holding strong on fourth and short. The Wildcats extended their lead to 14-0 on the rst play of the second quarter, when Nolan DeLong scored on a 64-yard touchdown run. Right before halftime, Pekin scored their rst touchdown of the game on a Michael Jones 1-yard run to set the rst half score at 14-7 Durant.

 Durant scored the only points in the third quarter when Head threw his second scoring pass of the game, this one to 10-yard score to give Durant a 21-7 lead. The Wildcats held that lead into the fourth quarter, but Pekin cut Durant’s lead in half, 21-14 after a Colton Comstock 4-yard run. That score would be the nal though, as neither team could score again.

 Durant scored 21 or more points in each of their three district wins over Cardinal, Highland, and Pekin. The Wildcats only scored 14 points in each of their district losses at Belle Plaine and at BGM. Keagan Head passed for 90 yards on 9-of-17 attempts with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Head nished second in the district to Maddux Jones from Highland in passing yards. Both are back next year. Brothers Nolan and Drew DeLong led Durant in rushing. Nolan rushed for 134 yards on 16 carries with a touch- down and Drew rushed for 83 yards on 14 carries. Jake Willkomm caught a team high ve receptions for 55 yards. Defensively, Durant had four players with 10 or more tackles. Tony Dillabough led with 15 while Marcus Engstler and Nolan De- Long each had 12, and Drew DeLong had 10.

 Durant will say goodbye to seniors Drew De- Long, Jake Willkomm, Marcus Engstler, Bren- dan Paper, Logan Callison, Lucas Callison, Joe Lilienthal, and Cody Boberg.

1,000-yard mark hit by two Wildcats this season in passing and rushing totals
 Two Durant players topped the 1,000-yard mark at their respective position. Quarterback Kea- gen Head passed for 1,028 yards on 77 completions with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The 2019 season was his rst as a starter. Also topping the 1,000-yard mark this season as freshman running back Nolan DeLong rushed for 1,015 yards on 161 attempts with seven touchdowns. He rushed for 6.3 yards per carry. He was one of four running backs in the district to top 1,000 yards and of those four, he is the only one returning.

 Jake Willkomm led Durant receivers this year with 422 yards on 26 receptions with four touchdowns. Marcus Engslter and Nolan DeLong each caught 16 passes for 221 yards and 157 yards. Both scored two touchdowns. Defensively, Mar- cus Engstler led Durant in tackles with 105 and Nolan DeLong with 84.
