Tipton beats Wilton in battle of state ranked teams

Tigers Beat Ranked Beavers In Five Sets
WILTON — The River Valley Conference South Division is the home of three very good volleyball teams. Tipton, Wilton and West Liberty all are ranked in the top-5 of their respective classes. Tipton took the Class 3A No. 1 ranking to Wilton last Tuesday to face the Class 2A No. 5 Beavers. The Beavers already had beaten Class 3A No. 5 West Liberty on their home floor the week before and Wilton was hoping to take command of the RVC South with two weeks left in the season. It wasn’t to be. The Tigers held on, winning the match in five sets after leading the match 2-0. THS improved to 4-1 in the RVC while Wilton suffered their first loss in RVC play and fell to 3-1. Both teams won their RVC matches two days later. The Tigers, Beavers, and Comets have all played each other with each team winning one match as all three have 1-1 records against the others.
Tipton won the match three sets to two. The Tigers won the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-21 to take a 2-0 match lead. THS looked like they would get the sweep, but Wilton fought back, winning a pivotal third set, 25-23 to cut Tipton’s lead to 2-1. The Beavers would win the fouth set by the same 25-23 score to tie the match at 2-2. Tipton would take a 7-0 lead in the fifth and deciding
match, but Wilton would gain fight back. The Beavers outscored Tipton 9-2 to get the score to 11-9, but Tipton would score four of the next six match points to take the deciding fifth set 15-11, claiming the match 3-2.
Tipton senior Sommer Daniel collected
career dig No. 1,000 in the match. That feat gave her a an accomplishment
not seen. Daniel now has 1,000 kills, 1,000 assists and 1,000 digs, and her totals continue to climb as the Tigers look to make a deep postseason run. There is no history of the triple-1,000 marks in the state.
The Tigers got a 31 kill, 33-dig, 28-for-29 serving night for Sommer Daniel to lead THS. The 31 kills broke the school record set in 1991. The Tigers also broke two team records
in the match. The Tigers had 61 assists breaking the record of 56, and the Tigers had 67 kills, breaking the previous record of 59.
Tipton had two others reach double digits in kills with Carly Puffer getting
14 and Kamryn Chapman with 12. Both Daniel and Alex Hoffman each had 25 assists in the match. Karlee Kamberling led Tipton in digs in the match with 35 while Puffer had 19, Bailey Schmidt had 17 and Hoffman had 13. Tipton really played well at the net in the match, getting 17 big blocks in the match. Kamryn Chapman led with five while Kelley Lieser and Puffer each had four blocks. THS served 104-for-111 with nine ace serves as a team. After Daniel, Chapman served 20-for-21 with an ace.
The Beavers were led by sophomores
Kelsey Drake, Ella Caffery, and Alexa Garvin. Drake converted nearly half of her 49 attack attempts into kills, finishing as the Beavers leader in the match with 20.
Caffery had 16 and Garvin seven. Garvin is the only one of the trio under
100 kills, but she sits at 93. The Beavers switched to a 6-2 offense in recent weeks and it is paying off. Caffery
had 23 assists and Drake 21 in the match. Three Wilton players collected
20 or more digs in the match. Garvin and Mallory Lange tied for the team lead with 23 while Caffery had 22. As a team, Wilton had 101 digs. Wilton had five blocks with Caffery and Drake each with two.
Wilton served 92-for-99 in the match with nine ace serves. Garvin was 20-for-21, Caffery was 19-for-21 and Drake was 13-for-14. The trio combined for eight of the teams nine ace serves. The Beavers play three more RVC matches starting at Durant Tuesday, October 1. The final
two RVC matches at Wilton with Iowa City Regina coming to town this Thursday and Northeast coming in on Thursday, October 10.
The Tigers have two remaining River Valley Conference matches starting this Thursday, when they host West Branch for senior night. Tipton will play at the Western Dubuque Tournament Saturday. Tipton’s last regular season RVC match is Thursday, October 10 at Camanche.
