Tigers roll to fifth win with 48-6 win over West Burlington

Tigers roll to fifth win with 48-6 win over West Burlington
TIPTON — The first brisk Friday night of high school football saw Tipton roll another district 5 foe. Last Friday, the Tigers beat the West Burlington Falcons 48-6 to improve to 3-0 in district play and 5-2 overall. The Tigers have scored 48 points in two of the last three weeks of district play For the season THS has scored over 20 points in all by two of their seven games. The Tigers will travel to Louisa-Muscatine this week before returning home to face West LIberty in week nine.
The Tiger's defense was on full display in the game. The Tigers shut down the Falcons passing game, allowing zero passing yards in the game. Making the Falcons one-dimensional, the Tigers could take advantage of their strong defensive line and disrupt the Falcons running
game. The Tiger defense allowed 87 rushing yards and gave up only 1.9 yards per rush attempt. The Tiger defense also came up with five big turnovers, all fumble recoveries. Kaleb Nerem, Jesse Lieser, Levi Daniel, Skyler Schmidt, and Lake Anderson all had one recovery. The Tigers lead the district in fumble recoveries in district games with seven. The next closest is four. The Tipton lineman was near the top of the THS tackle leaders in the game. Nile Schuett led THS in tackles with seven including five solo tackles while Frank Bierman had five and Jesse Lieser four tackles. Linebackers
Kaleb Nerem and Andrew Comstock each had five tackles. Schuett also had two tackles for loss and Nerem had one.
Tipton overwhelmed the Falcons with 34 first-half points to take a 34-6 halftime lead. The Tigers scored on four of their first five possessions in the game. Tipton turned the first Falcon turnover into points in the opening quarter on a Connor Hermiston 5-yard run. Later in the quarter, Frank Bierman set the score at 13-0 after a 30-yard touchdown run. Tipton extended their lead to 27-0 in the second quarter after scoring runs by Bierman for ten yards and Connor Hermiston for eight yards. West Burlington would score their only points of the game in the second quarter off of a Tipton turnover. Jonah Fritz scored on a 28-yard touchdown run to set the score at 27-6. Tipton closed the first-half scoring with a Blake Wilkins 13-yard touchdown pass to Payten Elijah.
Tipton outscored the Falcons 14-0 in the second half. The first score set the 35-point mercy rule, running clock in effect, after Bierman’s third rushing touchdown, a 22-yard run to set the score at 41-6. Austin Lenz added a 13-yard scoring run later in the quarter to set the score at its final of 48-6.
The Tigers will be looking in a mirror of sorts in week eight when they travel to Louisa-Muscatine. The Falcons run an offense similar to the Tigers. The Falcons have one of the top players in District 5 in Chase Kruse. Kruse has passed for 411 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 925 yards and eight touchdowns. The Falcons also have running backs Hayden Calvelage (493 yards 9 TD’s) and Kaden Schneider (205 yards 2 TDs) to hand the football to. Wilie Jacobs, Dallas Vasquez, and Schneider lead the Falcons in receiving hovering at or just over 100 receiving yards. Brock Jeamby has a team-high 13 receptions for 87 yards. Defensively, the Falcons are led by Hayden Calvelage with 61 tackles, six sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
The Falcons end the season with home games with Tipton this week and with Mount Vernon
in week nine. The matchup will feature the top-two rushing teams in district 5. Tipton leads the district with 2,007 yards while the Falcons are second with 1,816 yards. Each team has over 20 rushing touchdowns on the season and average over six yards per carry. The two teams also are 1-2 in the least points given up this season. The Tigers have given up 99 and the Falcons 117. In district play Tipton has surrendered 26 points while the Falcons have given up 62. Louisa-
Muscatine comes into week eight having lost two straight to Camanche and West Liberty.

Tigers In Driver’s Seat For District 5 Title
The Tipton football team has control over their own destiny after winning last Friday. They are the only District 5 team that is unbeaten at 3-0 in district play. There is a two-way tie for second place in the district between Camanche, and West Liberty. The Tigers have defeated Camanche and play Lousia-Muscatine in week eight and West Liberty in week nine.
A game to watch this week will be Camanche at West Liberty. If the Indians can beat the Comets,
and the Tigers would beat Louisa-Muscatine, the Tigers would claim the district title. In that scenario, Tipton would move to 4-0 in district play while West Liberty would be two games back at 2-2. Though there would be one more week of district play and Camanche would be 3-1, the Tigers would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker after defeating the Indians in week 5. If both West Liberty and Tipton win in week eight, that would set up a winner-take-all defacto district title games in week nine when the Comets come to Tipton to close out the regular season.
