Durant win sets up big game at BGM

Durant win sets up big game at BGM
DURANT — The second to last home game of the year saw Durant pick up a big 34-13 win over Highland. The Wildcats improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in district play. The Wildcats
will travel to Class A state-ranked BGM Friday. If the Wildcats can upset the Bears, they would eliminate BGM from the playoff picture and possibly set themselves up for a better chance at the postseason with a wild-card spot.
The Wildcats exacted a measure of revenge on Highland as well. The Huskies knocked the Wildcats out of the 2018 playoffs with a 14-13 win. Durant beat Highland 14-0 in the 2018 regular season on their way to a District 6 title.
Durant scored the first points of the game with 2:18 left in the first quarter on a Nolan DeLong 43-yard run for a 7-0. On the ensuing drive, Highland used a 63-yard run by Owen Donovan to set up their first score, a Cole Adamson 1-yard run to tie the game.
Durant scored the only points in the second quarter to take a 20-6 halftime lead. DeLong’s second scoring run, set up by a big 4th down and 7 conversion from the 10-yard line on a Keagan Head pass to Jake Willkomm gave Durant a 13-6 lead with 4:52 left in the first half. After stopping Highland on their next drive, Durant scored again, capping a 7-play drive with a Keagan Head 19-yard run on a pass play that broke down and he had to scramble.
Highland had trouble offensively in the second half, having to punt on two of their five possessions
and seeing two other drives end in a turnover of downs, and a lost fumble. The one drive that was successfully produced their second touchdown, a Cole Adamson 30-yard run to set the score at 20-13, making the game a one-score game.
Durant, however, would pull away from there, scoring on back-to-back possessions for the second time in the game. Two Marcus Engstler touchdown runs, his first two this season, one from 1-yard and another from 17 yards, gave the Wildcats a 34-13 lead with a 14-point fourth quarter.
Nolan DeLong rushed for a career high 245 yards on 38 carries.
He is now over 800 yards this season and has a good chance to challenge for 1,000 yards for the season with two good games in the final two weeks. Keagan Head passed for 79 yards on 7-of-9 completions and is also over 800 passing yards, and could challenge getting 1,000 passing yards with a couple of good games the final two weeks. Brendan Paper caught three passes for 42. Defensively, DeLong had 11 tackles and Marcus Engstler had nine. DeLong had seven had tackles for loss.
Adamson rushed for 68 yards for Highland and Owen Donovan rushed for 114 yards.
